My Mom's Spa Rant: Is She Right or Missing Out?
Growing up, I constantly debated with my mother about the value of spa treatments and massages. She firmly believed that indulging in these experiences was nothing more than a waste of time and money. While she understood the necessity of salon services, she couldn't fathom the idea of going to a spa.
"Why would I undress and let strangers touch me naked?" she would ask.
Moreover, she saw them as excessively pricey. As a spa therapist myself, I began to understand that her negative perception stemmed from her personal experiences, and I couldn't blame her entirely.
The Initial Skepticism
I vividly remember our conversations where I would try to convince my mother to give spa therapy a chance. She often complained about body aches, and I believed a spa treatment could relieve her. But she would brush it off, relying on sleep and pain medication as her go-to solutions.
Misconceptions and Resistance
Digging deeper, I realized that my mother had formed her opinions based on a combination of misconceptions and her limited exposure to the spa industry. She couldn't shake off the notion of undressing and being touched by strangers. Additionally, the prices charged by the spas I had worked for were beyond her comfort zone, reinforcing her skepticism.
Empathy and Understanding
Rather than dismissing my mother's reservations, I chose to empathize with her concerns. I realized that my own actions might have contributed to her skepticism. The first time I gave her a massage, I unknowingly applied too much pressure, causing discomfort and making her overall experience less enjoyable. It was only fair that she formed her opinions based on that encounter.
Challenging Misconceptions
To challenge my mother's misconceptions, I began to explain the wide range of spa options available, emphasizing that not all establishments were the same. Just as there are varying levels of quality in restaurants, the same applies to spas. I stressed the importance of finding a reputable spa and communicating preferences to ensure a comfortable and personalized experience.
Benefits of Spa Therapy
In my efforts to change my mother's perspective, I felt it crucial to highlight the potential benefits of spa therapy and massage. Beyond relaxation, these treatments offer numerous advantages, such as stress reduction, improved blood circulation, relief from muscle tension, and an overall enhancement of well-being. Sharing these benefits helped her see that spa therapy was about more than just pampering—it had genuine therapeutic effects.

Through our shared experiences, she has discovered the power of relaxation, stress relief, and the positive impact it has on overall well-being.
Not only has my mom's support been invaluable to my spa business, but it has also strengthened our bond. We now enjoy spa treatments together, cherishing these moments of relaxation and rejuvenation. It's heartwarming to witness her newfound enthusiasm as she recommends my spa to friends, family, and even strangers.
